The Client - Practitioner Relationship
The concept of collaboration is based on the belief that the client is the expert on themselves. Formulating a relationship with a Practitioner that has embraced their authentic self, creates an intimacy that provides a safe and supportive environment for the client. The Practitioner can encourage and share from a place of deep understanding without judgment. We believe, for many people, a collaborative method can be more beneficial, as the relationship between the Practitioner and Client becomes a model for how the client wishes to interact with the world. Trust and a good rapport are critical to this process. It is essential that JBeC philosophy, and Practitioner personality, resonate and align with client personality and beliefs. The concept of collaboration is a slight deviation from traditional psychotherapy, and is best suited for a client who is most interested in changing their world to fit themself, as opposed to changing themself to better fit in the world.
In order to create the partnership needed to achieve true collaboration, it is important that both parties have realistic expectations. Change is not instantaneous, nor is it linear. Change is the precursor to true healing. Traumatic events tend to cause intense pain. Intense pain is often the catalyst for seeking support and inspiring action. Often the pain multiplies, as deep internal wounds are triggered. The self reflection and radical honesty that is required to create sustainable change, can intensify the emotional pain. Sometimes it can seem like the solution feels worse than the initiating event, as the client begins to take accountability and takes the first steps away from trauma traits, maladaptive coping mechanisms and negative relationships. It is important that the Practitioner and Client’s approach provides a plan to replace those negative behaviors with positive solutions as the client moves towards a healthier way of interaction. This is a very individualized process and Clients will have additional reflection, processing and implementation to do outside of sessions. It is also exhausting. Clients should be prepared to give themselves grace as the mental effects of sessions can sometimes linger.
